The rocky start to the second half of the Canada West men’s hockey season continues for the No. 5 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies after a 6-4 upset loss to the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at Rutherford Rink.

With the loss, the Huskies drop to 14-7-0 and have lost four of their five games to start 2013. It also moves the Huskies into third place in the conference. UBC improves to 12-7-2 and continues to push up the conference standings, tied for fourth.

Six different T-Birds found the net in the upset win. Even with the high scoring affair just Max Grassi, Neil Manning and Brad Hoban finished the game with multiple points each scoring a goal and adding an assist.

A rush into the Huskies zone on the opening faceoff led to the T-Birds first goal. Manning’s shot beat a sliding David Reekie glove side 23 seconds into the game. The Huskies notched the game on the power play after Scott MacDonald was caught for slashing. Captain Brennan Bosch beat Jordan White at 12:09 on a play in front of the net. But before the period was over, UBC would retake the lead on a goal by Hoban at 15:32.

Rookie Jimmy Bubnick tied the game at two at 8:30 in the second period. Streaking on a rush into the T-Birds zone, White let a large rebound out on a Bubnick shot. The rebound went right back onto his stick and into the net.

It didn’t take long for UBC to answer back. Scott Wasden found the net at 9:47 in the second. Two quick goals just 29 seconds apart put Saskatchewan back in front. Kenton Dulle tallied at 14:32, before Derek Hulak scored at 15:01 on a rush down the right side of the ice. Cole Wilson tied the game on the power play at 17:18 for the T-Birds. The fourth goal chased Reekie from the net.

UBC went ahead 5-4 on the power play when Grassi’s shot bounced off new Huskie netminder Ryan Holfeld’s shoulder and just into the net at 10:20 on the power play in the third period. The T-Birds added an empty net tally by Dillon Wagner at 19:02.
