January 19, 2013, Victoria, BC – (ISN) – The Camosun College Chargers basketball teams played two tough battles against the visiting Capilano Blues Friday Night with mixed results. While the Chargers women had their hands full going up against the PACWEST’s No. 1 team, the 7th place Chargers men pulled off an exciting win against the conference’s No. 4 squad.
The Chargers women jumped to a 5-0 lead before being trumped by the Blues who moved ahead of the home team by 3 at the end of the first quarter and to 10 at the half. Despite a close 3rd quarter where Camosun outshot Capilano 17-16, the Chargers could not carry their momentum into the final frame and were overpowered by their opponents falling to the conference’s top team by 20. Third-year wing Elyse Matthews (Spectrum) led Camosun with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists and 4 steals. Friday’s loss moves the Chargers to 5-7.

The Chargers men struggled in the early portion of tonight’s game, trailing by 10 at the end of the first quarter. Despite matching the Blues point for point in the second, the Chargers were unable to get ahead and maintained their 10-point deficit at the end of the first half. The third quarter proved to be a game-changer for the home team with Camosun outscoring the Blues 28-13 and taking a 62-57 lead. In the 4th, the Blues managed to tie the game at 71-all but the Chargers answered back to regain the lead and take the win 75-72. Third-year point guard Jordan Elvedahl led the Chargers to their fourth win of the season with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 1 steal.
