Huskies Over UBC Thunderbirds

January 20, 2013, Saskatoon, SK (ISN) – University of Saskatchewan newcomer Jake Trask scored the winning goal in a shootout to lead the Huskies to a 4-3 victory over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds Saturday night in Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink.

Trask, who joined the Huskies in January, was the fifth Huskie shooter to take an attempt. After the first three shooters were denied by UBC starting goaltender Steven Stanford and Huskie netminder Ryan Holfeld, Brad Hoban was able to beat Holfeld with fancy stick work. Needing to score to stay alive, Kenton Dulle beat Stanford top shelf.

Once again the next three shooters were stopped by the goaltenders with Huskie Derek Hulak hitting the post and T-Bird Cole Pruden the crossbar. After Trask’s goal, UBC needed Neil Manning to score to stay alive but Holfeld made the stop with his pads.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 15-7-0, while UBC moves to 12-7-3. Saskatchewan moves into a tie for second place in the conference standings, while UBC sits in fifth.

Saskatchewan’s Cody Smuk struck first on a scramble in front of UBC netminder Steven Stanford at 9:37 in the first period.

The second period was all Saskatchewan adding two more goals in the frame to extend the lead. Rookie Brandon Herrod tallied his eighth of the season when his hard shot from the right side of the net beat Stanford at 4:35. Matthew Spafford gave the Huskies a three goal lead at 13:59 when he picked up a Stanford rebound sliding it into the net with a quick wrist shot.

Ryan Holfeld’s bid for the shutout was snapped at 6:25 in the third period when the T-Birds’ Cole Wilson capitalized on a five-on-three advantage. UBC was given the power player after a kerfuffle in front of the net landed Ryan Funk in the box with an already penalized Kyle Aschim.

UBC tied the game with goals 27 seconds apart. T-Birds leading scorer Max Grassi tallied the first at 14:07 on a Holfeld rebound, followed by a quick shot by Nate Fleming into the far side at 14:34.

Holfeld finished the game making 39 saves, while Stanford stopped 28 at the other end of the ice for the T-Birds.
