Huskies win 21 medals at Golden Bear Open


January 19, 2013, Saskatoon, SK – The University of Saskatchewan Huskie track & field team returned with 21 medals from the Golden Bear Open in Edmonton on the weekend.

Between the men and women’s teams, the Huskies earned six gold medals, 10 silver medals and five bronze medals.

On the field, defending CIS pole vault champion Lane Britnell captured gold clearing five-metres, while defending Canada West shotput and weight throw champion Karla Gabruch finished second in both events. She tossed 15.80-metres in weight throw and 12.80-metres in shot put. Nolan Machisnic finished second in weigth throw with a toss of 15.61-metres in weight throw. Courtney Erickson added a bronze in pole vault clearing 3.62-metres.

Saskatchewan was also strong in the pentathlon taking gold and silver in the men’s division. James Digel finished first capturing 3,237 points in the five events and Derrek Sawatzky finished second with 2,972.

The rest of the Huskies’ medals came on the track.

Gold medalists on the track included: Brittany Elliott in the 1500-m (4:45.20); Tyler Young in the 60-metre hurdles (8.51); and both the women’s and men’s 4X400-metre relay team.

Silver medalists included Ryan Graf in the 300-m dash (35.45) and the 60-metres (6.99); Gabrielle Edwards in the 1500-m (4:46.46); Amanda Banks in the 600-m (1:32.41); Daniel Block in the 600-m (1:21.87) and the men’s 4X200-metre relay team.

Winning bronze for the Huskies was Michelle Young in hurdles (8.80); Brittany Eilliot in 1000-m (3:00.32); Kyle Donsberger in 300-m (35.49) and Daniel Block in the 1000-m (2:33.32).

The Huskies will compete again January 25-26 at the 44th Annual Sled Dog Open at the Saskatoon Field House.
