Janurary 19, 2013, Lethbridge, AB (ISN) – The Trinity Western University Spartans used a strong start, a dominant finish and some hot shooting to defeat the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 96-72 Friday night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta.

The Spartans who only won two of their first nine Canada West games have now won three of their last four contests to improve to 5-8, while Lethbridge has lost four of their last five and falls to 6-7.

“Everything that we did today we did really strong. Our strength is our whole team and the guys really distributed the ball well,” commented TWU head coach Scott Allen. “Tonight was a good win for the guys and we will hope to do the same thing tomorrow.”

Third-year guard Mark Perrin was electric for the Spartans, notching 33 points on 12-18 shooting, including seven from beyond the arc, and also pulled down 11 boards. Fourth-year guard Morgan Duce led the ‘Horns with 20 points and post Derek Waldner logged his third straight double-double and 21st of his career with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

The Spartans jumped to an early lead and finished the first quarter with a solid 27-15 margin. In the second quarter the Pronghorns cut the lead to two points, 38-36, with a 21-11 run, but were unable to gain the upper hand. TWU finished the half with a 15-5 run to lead 53-40 at the break.

In the fourth quarter the Pronghorns continued to make a run as they closed to single digits, 76-67, after a Duce free throw with 5:48 remaining. But it would be as close as the home team would get over the remainder of the evening as the Langley, B.C. squad exploded offensively to finish the game with a 20-to -5 run and an impressive 24-point victory.

The ‘Horns went 8-37 for 22 percent from the three point line and shot 33 percent, 26-78, from the floor, compared to the Spartans’ 11-27 for 41 percent from the three point line and 50 percent , 37-74, from the field.
