The Everett Silvertips scored three goals in less than five minutes early in the second period Saturday night, giving them all the offense they would need in a 3-2 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes at Comcast Arena.
Tyler Sandhu recorded a goal and an assist and Josh Winquist notched two assists in the victory. Mitch Skapski scored his first career goal, with Mirco Mueller also lighting the lamp as the ‘Tips went ahead to stay with three quick goals early in the second frame. Austin Lotz (11-14-0-1) turned away 30 shots in goal to win for the eighth time in his last 12 starts.
Lethbridge outshot Everett 15-8 and scored the only goal of the first period to take the lead after 20 minutes of play. After Ben Betker lost his stick behind the net, Jamien Yakubowski had time to set up Reid Duke for a one-timer that beat Austin Lotz on the stick side midway through the period. Lotz stopped 14 other shots in the period to keep the deficit at 1-0 through 20 minutes.
Everett scored three times early in the second period to build a two-goal edge, starting things off just 19 seconds in shortly after a powerplay expired. Josh Winquist circled the Hurricanes’ net and sent the puck back to Mirco Mueller, whose shot from atop the circle beat the glove of Christopher Tai. The ‘Tips took the lead three minutes later when Mitch Skapski’s quick shot off a Logan Aasman feed snuck inside the near post for his first career WHL goal. The Silvertips scored their third in five minutes when Winquist won a faceoff cleanly to Tyler Sandhu, who fired a wrist shot off the far post and in to make it 3-1.
Lethbridge had a lengthy 5-on-3 powerplay later in the period, with Austin Lotz making save after save on a flurry of shots before Adam Henry eventually scored in the waning seconds of the second penalty to bring Lethbridge back within one. Shots were 15-8 in the second in favor of Everett.
Both teams had quality scoring chances in the third, but neither team found the back of the net as Everett finished out the 3-2 victory. Lotz and the penalty killers continued to shut the door after the ‘Canes were awarded a late powerplay, securing the eventual victory for the Silvertips.
The Silvertips went 5 for 6 on the penalty kill and were scoreless on five powerplay attempts of their own.
Christopher Tai (3-2-0-0) stopped 30 of 33 in net for Lethbridge as Everett finished with a 33-32 shot advantage.
Their five-game homestand complete, the Silvertips will now travel four consecutive road games against B.C. Everett will then play in Kamloops and twice in Prince George before returning home to take on the Portland Winterhawks on Tuesday, January 29 at Comcast Arena.
