January 22, 2013, VICTORIA, BC (ISN) – Entering into his 30th season as head coach of the University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s swim programs, Peter Vizsolyi is viewing the Canada West swim championships as a meet where his athletes can get some good assessments prior to the CIS Championship in February.

Jan. 25-27: Canada West Swimming Championship (Commonwealth Pool)

The Vikes men’s swim team has been sitting consistently in the No. 7 spot in the CIS Top 10 rankings and with some depth to their 22-man roster this could be the year that they make a run for the Canada West title.

Open-water swimmer and Olympic bronze medalist Richard Weinberger (Surrey, BC) is back to swim with the Vikes after taking last year off to train for London 2012, while veteran swimmer Nicholas Sinclair (Victoria, BC) is also back in action for the UVic men.

Rookies Will Brothers (Victoria, BC), Eric Hedlin (San Diego, CA), Alec Page (Cortes Island, BC) and Keegan Zanatta (Victoria, BC) all boast international experience and will be looking to make a splash at their first Canada West championships.

Although it is a rebuilding year for the UVic women, Olympian Stephanie Horner (Beaconsfield, QC) has returned for her third year of eligibility and will certainly give the young Vikes team a boost.

Fifth-year Eleanora Dalling (Vancouver, BC) and fourth-year Allison Wood (Victoria, BC) are both backstroke specialists looking for CIS qualification, while rookie Rachael Newman (Victoria, BC) has had an impressive showing at several early season meets.

The Vikes will have a slight edge in this year’s competition as they will be competing at home in Victoria’s Saanich Commonwealth Pool, a familiar training ground for all the UVic swimmers. The championship will begin on Jan. 25 and will run until Sunday, Jan. 27. Full information and bulletins can be found on the CHAMPIONSHIP PAGE.
