January 26, 2013, Saskatoon, SK, (ISN) – With an eye toward a playoff push, the visiting Brandon University Bobcats defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

With the win Brandon improves to 7-10 on the season and is in the race for one of the five remaining spots in the Canada West postseason. The Huskies drop to 4-14.

Saskatchewan looked to be in control of the first set leading 20-16 after a Bobcats service error. The Bobcats were able to chip away at the Huskies’ lead thanks to strong offence by Meaghan Robertson and tied the set at 24. A Huskie attack that sailed out of bounce and a Victoria Dakin service ace gave Brandon the 26-24 win.

The Bobcats jumped out of the gate early scoring the first six points in the second set. A strong kill by Saskatchewan captain Candace Hueser brought the Huskies’ to 6-2, but it was as close as they could get. Brandon sailed to the 25-13.

Carmen Dubnick pulled the Huskies into a tie with Brandon at 10 with an attack that froze the Bobcats backline in the third set. The Bobcats strong play gave them the lead again until the 19th point when a Hueser block put Saskatchewan ahead. Once again the Bobcats went ahead, but the Huskies were able to tie the game at 24. Dakin and Shanlee McLennan attacks gave the Bobcats the 27-25 win.

Robertson and McLennan led the Bobcats with 12 kills each, while Kendra Bommersbach tallied a match-high 16 digs.

Hueser led the Huskies with a match-high 16 kills, while Anne Hanbidge and Haley Williams each recorded 12 digs.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at the PAC. First serve is 6:15 p.m.
