January 26, 2013, Calgary, AB (ISN) – In their first official Canada West match the No. 2 Trinity Western University Spartans handed the No. 10 Mount Royal University Cougars a straight set loss Friday evening on Kenyon Court at Mount Royal University in Calgary.
The 25-20, 25-18, 25-15 win moves the Spartans to 15-2 on the season while the loss drops the Cougars to 12-5.
Fourth year outside Amber Brown with 11 kills and four blocks, fifth year outside Amy Ott with 10 kills and four digs and third year middle Alicia Perrin with nine kills and three blocks led the Spartans, while Olivia Grecu with eight kills and 10 digs and Julia Pasieka with seven kills led the Cougars. TWU’s third year setter Kelci French ran the Spartans offence and finished with 23 set assists; while rookie libero Kristen Moncks had a team high 10 digs. Mount Royal setter Mackenzie Allen had 17 assists for the Cougars.
In the first set the Spartans led 6-4 but then erupted with nine- to-two run to take a 15-6 lead. The Spartans would lead 16- 11 at the break before taking the opening set 25-20.
The second set was similar to the first with TWU controlling the set immediately. The Spartan led 16-9 at the media timeout, before cruising to the 25-18 second set win.
The final set was all Trinity Western. The visitors from Langley, B.C. jumped out to a 13-3 lead before finishing off the set with a 25-15 win.
The two teams will matched up again tomorrow night at Mount Royal University. The match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. MST start.
Match Notes: TWU had the edge in blocks 12 to three and the edge in hitting percentage at 23.9 percent (39-18-88) to 2.1 percent (26-24-94)…the Spartans Kelci French is one service ace off of setting the TWU record of 37… tonight match marked the first time that TWU and MRU have met in Canada West action, with the Cougars debuting in the CIS this season…
