January 26, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team improved their record to 10-5 after dropping the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 81-64 on Jan 25. The WolfPack drop to 6-10 in the Canada West, while the Vikes still trail the 13-2 UBC Thunderbirds.

Fourth-year Terrell Evans (Las Vegas, NV) earned top honours with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds, while second year Vijay Dhillon (Richmond, B.C.) came off the bench to score two timely outside shots and end the game with 12 points.

For the WolfPack, Zach Usherwood led in scoring with 14 points. Brett Rouault added 12 points, while Akeem Pierre chipped in with nine points. Blaz Bozinovic totaled a team-high 12 rebounds.

“We shot the ball pretty well in the first half,” said Vikes head coach Craig Beaucamp. “That got us off to the lead that we needed and that was key. We were 9 for 19 in the first half. It’s funny. It doesn’t matter how you play, if you shoot the ball well, it takes care of a lot of problems.”

Fifth year Michael Acheampong (Toronto, Ont.) got the Vikes rolling early with a three-pointer only 15 seconds into the game. The Vikes had multiple contributors on route to a 19-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, the Vikes hit three back-to-back threes to go on a 14-0 run. Dhillon earned eight points in the quarter, while Victoria made good on six shots from beyond the arc to out score Thompson Rivers 25-8. The Vikes led 44-20 entering half time.

The Vikes struggled in the third quarter as the WolfPack edged the Vikes 25-15 in scoring but prevailed in the fourth to finish the game with a 81-64 victory. With the win, the Vikes improve to 10-5 and will face Thompson Rivers again, tomorrow, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast at
