January 27, 2013, Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team triumphed for the second night in a row after veterans Terrell Evans (Las Vegas, NV) and Chris McLaughlin (Oakville, ON) led with double-digit efforts in the 80-65 win over Thompson Rivers.
The Vikes improve their record to 11-5, while the WolfPack drop to 6-11.
Evans and McLaughlin each totaled 17 points and nine rebounds for the night, while Michael Acheampong (Toronto, Ont.) added 13 points and Brin Taylor(Edmonton) chipped in for 12.
For the WolfPack, fifth year Kevin Pribilsky continued his scoring ways, dominating with 17 points. Blaz Bozinovic had an impressive game with a double double of 12 points and 17 rebounds.
Despite the large win margin, it was the Vikes that trailed throughout the majority of the first quarter. Pribilsky hit an important three to push the home side’s lead to five but an outside response from Taylor helped the Vikes trail only by two at the first break.
Entering the second, it was Taylor, again, who helped cut the lead, as his second trey of the night got the Vikes within one, at 18-17. Taylor didn’t stop there, as the first-year Vike nailed two more timely three-pointers to lift the Vikes 36-32 entering half time.
In the third, Brett Rouault hit an important bucket to tie the game at 40 but some strong shooting from the line allowed the Vikes to gain as much as a eight point advantage. The Vikes led 57-49 entering the final quarter.
The Vikes opened the fourth on a quick 5-0 run before opening up the game to a 17-point lead. Bozinovic did well from the line to close the gap but it would not be enough as the visitors took the 80-65 win to improve their Canada West record to 11-5.
Next weekend, Feb. 1-2, the Vikes will host the UNBC Timberwolves at McKinnon gym. The games will be broadcast live at http://UVic.canadawest.tv
