January 27, 2013, Victoria, B.C. – After day two of the 2013 Canada West Swimming Championships hosted by the University of Victoria Vikes, both men’s and women’s teams sit in fourth place with the Vikes men tallying 475.5 points and the UVic women earning 224.

Several Vikes pulled CIS qualifying times and will be competing in the CIS Swimming Championships in Calgary, Feb. 21-23.

It was certainly a day for the University of Calgary Dinos and the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds as both teams boasted a large number of medal performances and look to be on track as winners of the Felstad Memorial and E.W. Griffiths trophies, respectively.

The best results of day two for the Vikes came from Ian Mattock (Sidney BC) and Allison Wood (Victoria, BC). Mattock raced to a silver medal in the men’s 400-m individual medley while Wood boasted a second-place finish in the women’s 200-m freestyle.

For the Vikes men, first-year swimmer Keegan Zanatta (Victoria, BC) placed fifth in the 100-m butterfly, posting a time of 55.98 and beating the CIS qualifying time of 56.32. In the same event fellow Vike Andre Kudaba (Port Coquitlam, BC) swam a time of 56.15, also racing well enough to attend the championships in February.

Additional key performances by the Vikes on the women’s side came from rookie swimmer Rachael Newman (Victoria, BC) and Olympian Stephanie Horner (Beaconsfield, Que.). Newman swam to a fourth-place finish in the women’s 100-m butterfly and with a time of 1:02.85 she meets the CIS qualifying time of 1:04.03 and will be competing in the CIS Championships next month. Horner came in fifth in the same event with a time of 1:03.25 and has also qualified for the national meet.

Racing alongside Vikes silver medalist Wood in the 200-m backstroke was veteran swimmer Eleanora Dalling (Vancouver, BC). Dalling finished fifth with a time of 2:18.79, qualifying for the Calgary-hosted tournament in February after beating the CIS standard of 2:19.83.

The third and final day of the 2013 Canada West Swimming Championships kicks off Sunday at Saanich Commonwealth Place, 10:00 a.m., with the women’s 50-m freestyle. Closing ceremonies with the presentation of all major Canada West awards will take place at 4:00 p.m. once the men’s 4×100-m medley relay has concluded.
