Oliver Bjorkstrand registered his first career hat trick as the Portland Winterhawks (39-7-1-2) earned a 7-0 win over the Tri-City Americans (28-19-1-2) in a road contest Saturday.

Brendan Burke stopped all 25 shots he faced for the Hawks’ second straight shutout, and his third of the season. Last night Portland defeated the Spokane Chiefs 3-0, with Mac Carruth blanking the Chiefs with 36 saves on 36 shots.

The Hawks scored the lone goal of the first when Bjorkstrand notched his 18th of the season at the 16:18 mark to give Portland a 1-0 lead going into the second.

It remained 1-0 until midway through the second when Portland exploded for three goals in under two minutes. The barrage started with a power play goal from Seth Jones at the 9:59 mark, then just 1:01 later Brendan Leipsic scored his 31st of the season to make it 3-0. The Hawks kept pressing, and just 43 seconds after Leipsic’s goal, Nic Petan made it 4-0 with his 33rd goal of the season, which remained the score going into the third.

Bjorkstrand scored his second of the game 2:19 into the third to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead, then Leipsic followed with his second of the game at the 6:36 mark as Portland went ahead 6-0. Bjorkstrand completed his first hat trick with his third of the game at the 17:32 mark to make it a 7-0 game.

With an assist, Ty Rattie now has points in all 10 games this month, with six goals and 13 assists for 19 points in January. His points streak is at 13 games going back to before he left for the World Junior Championship.
