January 26, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – It was a successful day on Friday for the Trinity Western swimming teams as four of the Spartans six swimmers posted season’s best times while the Spartans men’s 800m freestyle relay team finished sixth amongst eight schools Friday at the Canada West Championships at Saanich Commonwealth Place.
The Spartans men’s 800m relay team finished in 7:55.06, beating both Regina and Manitoba and earning the team 26 points in the overall standings. Prior to Friday’s effort, the foursome of Kirby Johnson (Moscow, Idaho), Patrick Loftus (Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho), Nick Welychko (Castlegar, B.C.) and Brian MacPhail (Penticton, B.C.) had never competed as a team in the 800m relay.
Individually, the Spartans had season’s best times from Anna de Tar (Post Fall, Idaho), Loftus, MacPhail and Welychko.
Loftus has the Spartans top finish of the day, as he was 14th overall in the 50m backstroke with a time of 27.62, bettering his season’s best of 27.75.
Both MacPhail and Welychko earned season’s bests in the 50m breastroke, with MacPhail finishing 20th with a time of 30.96, bettering his previous mark of 31.19, and Welychko finishing 22nd with a time of 31.15, which shaved 0.16 from his previous time of 31.31.
On the women’s side, de Tar finished 26th in the 50m butterfly with a time of 31.50, which beat her previous time of 31.78.
While Kiely Cunningham (Maple Ridge, B.C.) was just off her season’s best, she did finish 16th overall in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 35.88.
As a team, TWU finished the day with 30 points.
The Spartans will be back in the pool over the weekend as the Canada West Championships continue.
