January 27, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – With a ninth place finish and a school record-breaking performance in the 200m freestyle, Trinity Western’s Kirby Johnson (Moscow, Idaho) qualified for the CIS national championships as he led the Spartans effort at the Canada West Championships Saturday at Saanich Commonwealth Place.
The first-year Johnson won the “B” Final with a time of 1:51.40, which earned him a spot at the national championships, which will be contested Feb. 21-23 in Calgary. His time also broke the Spartans 200m free record, which was set last year by Christian Desjarlais at 1:51.99.
Also scoring for TWU was Brian MacPhail (Penticton, B.C.) and Nick Welychko (Castlegar, B.C.) in the 400m individual medlay, with MacPhail finishing 12th with a time of 4:41.04 and Welychko finishing 13th with a time of 4:41.45, and Patrick Loftus (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho) in the 200m backstroke as he finished 13th with a time of 2:08.94.
The Spartans 400m free relay also scored as the team finished eighth with a time of 3:40.15.
