January 27,2013, Vancouver, BC (ISN)- Looking for a better result after a straight set loss last evening, the Heat returned to War Memorial Gymnasium looking for vengeance against their UBC counterparts on Saturday night. However, the Heat just could not find their rhythm, and were unable to stave off the Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds rolled to a straight set victory 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-21).
Scoring by committee, four Heat players had six or more kills over the course of the match, but none were able to take over the game. Greg Niemantsverdriet (4th year, Vernon, BC) and Brett Uniat (5th year, Cochrane, AB) had 7 kills, while Jon Russo (2nd year, Lake Country, BC) and Riley McFarland (5th year, Surrey, BC) had 6, but as a team, the Heat were only able to notch a .125 kill percentage.
On a positive note, first-year setter Kristof Schlagintweit (Abbottsford, BC) put in a strong showing. The rookie collected 27 assists on the night as he continues to quarterback a veteran Heat offense.
Meanwhile, on the UBC side, former Heat middle Christ Howe put in a solid game against his former squad. The middle from Salt Spring Island, BC notched 6 kills on 11 attempts, while adding 3 block assists in the win for UBC.
With the loss, the Heat fall to 2-16 on the season, while UBC improves to 12-6.
UBC Okanagan will return to the road next weekend, traveling half-way across the country to Winnipeg to face off against the Wesmen.
