January 29, 2013, Saskatoon, SK (ISN) – The host executive committee for the 2013-14 CIS PotashCorp University Cup presented by Co-op is pleased to announce that Cameco will support an addition to the math curriculum for Saskatoon and area students and help them participate in the upcoming national men’s hockey CIS championship, which takes place March 14 – 17 at Credit Union Centre.

The Cameco Power Play Program will deliver a hockey-themed curriculum designed for students in grades 5 – 8. “We believe in the power of education and see this as an innovative way to engage students in learning math,” said Tim Gitzel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cameco. “By introducing the Cameco Power Play Program, we can bring some fun to the classroom, help kids get involved with the University Cup and support an important community event.”

In support of this new curriculum and the PotashCorp University Cup, Cameco has donated 15,000 tickets for students to attend games on Thursday, March 14th and Friday, March 15 at 1 p.m. The Cameco Power Play Program will be made available to classes in the Public, Catholic and Prairie Spirit School Divisions (including some high school classes). Classes using the curriculum will be provided with game passes and buses will be arranged for transportation to and from the game.

“It’s a great way to demonstrate to students how we use math in everyday life,” said David Crowell, Principal of King George School. “We are also grateful to Cameco for giving our students an opportunity to see the best of university hockey in Canada.”

Participation from students in the classroom and in the stands is a win-win for students and organizers. “The Cameco Power Play Program will elevate both student skills and the national championship”, said Grant Kook, Chair of the PotashCorp University Cup presented by Co-op. “We are thrilled that so many young fans will have the opportunity to participate thanks to Cameco, which will allow this national event to be more representative of our entire community.”

The PotashCorp University Cup presented by Co-op made the announcement on Tuesday at King George School with members of the U of S Huskies and Kinsmen Hockey League in attendance. Organizers of the PotashCorp University Cup and Cameco President and CEO, Tim Gitzel, joined the hockey players in a game of shinny.
