January 29, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – On Jan. 28, the Basketball BC Hall of Fame announced two members of the 2013 induction class with ties to the University of Victoria Vikes basketball programs.

Most recently joined Vikes women’s basketball coach Rich Chambers, as well as four-time CIAU national champion and current assistant men’s basketball coach Phil Ohl are being honoured. Chambers enters the coach category, while Ohl is being inducted in the athlete category.

Chambers was brought on board to coach the Vikes women in 2011 and brought with him a legacy of basketball excellence. Chambers has been coaching for over 40 years and has head coached the Center for Performance for Basketball BC, numerous Canada Basketball teams such as the Under 19 World Championship team, as well as a variety of provincial teams.

Ohl competed for the Vikes men’s basketball program when the dynasty was at its finest, from 1981-85. Ohl competed with Vikes legends Kelly Dukeshire, Eli Pasquale and Gerald Kazanowski, all of whom played under head coach Ken Shields. Ohl was a national champion with the Vikes for four-straight seasons, starting in 1981-82, and also competed for Canada for seven years.

Ohl competed at the FIBA World Championship, an Olympic qualifier, the World University Games and played professionally in Europe from 1985-89. In 1985, Ohl was named as a CIAU All-Canadian, the CIS Tournament Most Valuable Player, and Basketball BC Player of the Year.

In 2011-12, Phil Ohl entered his first year as an assistant coach with the Vikes men’s basketball team. Ohl, who has coached at every level of basketball, also served as the head coach of the Camosun College Chargers men’s basketball team for three years (1993-94 and 1996-97).

Also added to Basketball BC’s class of 2013 are Tim Frick, Teresa Gabriele, Dean MacKinnon and Allison McNeill. This will be the 11th class for the Basketball BC Hall of Fame, set to be officially honoured at the awards gala on Apr. 20 at the Langley Events Centre. Tickets are available for purchase.
