January 30, 2013, (ISN) –  This weekend, the Valhallians travel to MacDonald Park to play JBAA (1pm). The Academy squad also heads down for an exhibition match. Sunday, the 3rds host CW at 1pm. It’s Superbowl Sunday, so come for the rugby and stay for the football (and chili contest!).

There is still no women’s schedule posted, so I’m guessing they don’t start for a few weeks yet.

Saturday night there is also a big party at the club, with two live bands. Barney turned 30 today, so show up and help him celebrate.

BC Rugby Volunteer Appreciation

John Lyall has been honored as the January recipient of th BCRU Volunteer Award. You can read a full article and interview here:

Memorable quote: “…I am bossy and nosy, so volunteering allows me to delegate…” If you are wondering what the nickname is that he refers to in the interview, I’m pretty sure it’s Doormat.

Rep Players

Last weekend, Island rep squads hosted Vancouver, and there were a lot of Velox players in the mix.

Carmen Sund, Kelsey Oetting, Lynzi Anderson, Sam Robb, Selina McGinis, and Brittany Sims anchored the senior women squad. The U20 men (managed by John Lyall, coached by Winston Stanley) had Rick Brown, Jason Gagnier, Charles Kijec, and Tua Va’a. Matt Kemp represented us with the senior men, although Konrad Nikkel was also on the squad.

The senior men and women won their matches (33-13 and 17-10), while the U20’s lost (27-34). They travel this weekend to Abbotsford to take on the Valley squads.

Also worthy of a shout out are Jessica Dovanne and Julianne Zussman, who are headed to Houston this weekend with the Canada Women’s 7’s. Good luck to all our reps!

Weekend Results

The Valhallians earned some payback for their only loss of the season, beating Nanaimo 25-13. The Academy squad struggled though, losing 47-19 to Port Alberni.
