CBC Reveals Broadcast Plans for Scotiabank Hockey Day In Canada

February 4, 2013, (INS) Peterborough, Ontario serves as the primary backdrop for CBC’s coverage of the 13th Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada on Saturday, February 9, while communities all across the country are also celebrating the national pastime.

Throughout the day-long broadcast next Saturday, CBC brings viewers stories of people and communities who embody this year’s theme of ‘Heart’, including live look-ins from events taking place across Canada, bringing people together through the game we love.

This year’s broadcast begins at 12 noon ET/9 a.m. PT with Ron MacLean live from Peterborough and the Under the Lock Hockey Tournament at the Peterborough Lift Lock National Historic Site on the Trent-Severn Waterway. Don Cherry joins MacLean later in the day as the scene shifts to an OHL game between the Peterborough Petes and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. From there, MacLean and Cherry will be joined by NHL Alumni to bring Canadians a full day of exciting events.

CBC and Scotiabank have planned events in the Peterborough community leading up to the big day that highlight their shared commitment to grassroots hockey. Beginning Thursday, February 7, members of the HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA broadcast team including Ron MacLean, Don Cherry, P.J. Stock, Elliotte Friedman, Kevin Weekes, Andi Petrillo, and Cassie Campbell-Pascall, as well as NHL alumni Wendel Clark, Lanny McDonald, Steve Larmer, Darcy Tucker and Mark Napier will be in town taking part in various activities.

Local events include visits to local schools, on-ice clinics for young hockey players, receptions at local Scotiabank branches, a celebratory event at the Peterborough YMCA on the morning of February 8, and the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada Banquet later that evening. CBC and Scotiabank have arranged for the Stanley Cup to be on-site at several of the events taking place in Peterborough from February 7-9, where fans will have the chance to get an up-close look at the revered trophy. CBC’s Carly Agro reports live from Mile One Centre in St. John’s, NL where Olympic gold medalists Tessa Bonhomme and Sami Jo Small put future hockey stars through skill development drills at Scotiabank Girls Hockey Fest. Meanwhile, in Montreal, Stanley Cup-winning former NHL head coach Mike Keenan and renowned trainer and Olympian Ron Davidson teach on-and off-ice hockey skills to young players at Hyundai Hockey Nation from Sportplexe 4 Glaces.

Banff, AB, joins in the celebrations on February 9 with Banff National Park’s SnowDays Festival finale featuring the “Take It To The Street” three-on-three ball hockey tournament on the town’s main street, Banff Avenue. CBC’s Doug Dirks reports live from the event as more than 30 teams compete for the grand prize.

Game coverage begins at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT with the Edmonton Oilers visiting the Detroit Red Wings, while the Winnipeg Jets play host to the Ottawa Senators. Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada continues following the first games with more from MacLean as well as live look-ins from the celebratory events taking place across the country.

Scotiabank Hockey Tonight leads viewers into the evening set of games at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT, followed by an Original Six match-up that sees the Toronto Maple Leafs travel to Montreal to take on the rival Canadiens at 7 p.m. ET/ 4 p.m. PT. The final game of the night has the Calgary Flames taking on the Canucks in Vancouver at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT followed by After Hours with Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudey.
