February 9, 2013, (ISN) – With an angle double in the final end, Brent Pierce secured his team a spot in the 2013 Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men’s Curling Championship playoffs.

The New Westminster skip delighted the audience at the Parksville Curling Club by going for the takeout to win, instead of opting for the safer deuce which would have tied the game against Team Bilesky and taken it into an extra end.

Pierce himself was also clearly delighted with the shot, shooting both arms in the air and high-fiving his teammates, Third Jeff Richard, Second Kevin Reckseidler and Lead Grant Dezura.

Team Bilesky will now face Team Wakefield in Friday’s 7pm draw to advance.

Team Bilesky, skipped by Andrew Bilesky, is rounded out by Third Stephen Kopf, Second Derek Errington and Lead Aaron Watson.

Team Cotter, BC’s highest ranking men’s curling team, was wiped out of the competition after a loss to Team Buchy, of the Kimberley Curling Club.

Cotter, who has been a regular feature at Grand Slam of Curling events, lost twice to team Bilesky, giving him a 3-2 record going into Friday afternoon’s game against Buchy.

The Vernon team is rounded out by Third Jason Gunnlaugson, Second Tyrel Griffith and Lead Rick Sawatsky.

It wasn’t to be for the three-time BC champion Cotter. Team Buchy, with Tom Buchy as Skip, Dave Stephenson as third, Dave Toffolo as second and Darren Will as lead, were too strong for Team Cotter, beating them 9-5 after eight ends.

Cotter’s side was reportedly hit by illness at the competition.

Team Perepolkin, another side from Vernon, will face Team Buchy in tonight’s game for the chance to advance to the playoffs.

Perepolkin beat Team Dangerfield, from the Victoria Curling Centre, after they ran them out of rocks in the tenth end in Friday afternoon’s game. The final score was 8-5.

Team Wakefield, from the Royal City Curling Club, beat Team Horning (Castlegar/Penticton curling clubs), for the chance to grab the final playoff spot. They face Team Bilesky at 7pm tonight (Friday).

Team Geall, also from Royal City Curling Club, won the first spot in the playoffs on Thursday after a string of four wins.

Men’s teams fight for final play-off spots

Team Bilesky and Team Pierce are facing off for the second playoff spot at the 2013 Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men’s Curling Championship in Parksville.

A young Bilesky team, skipped by Andrew Bilesky from the Royal City Curling Club, pulled off a 7-4 win over defending champions Team Cotter (skip Jim Cotter, Vernon) in the morning’s draw, giving them a second chance to win a playoff berth.

They had faced Team Geall on Thursday for the first play-off spot, but lost 5-6. Team Geall, skipped by Sean Geall, who went to the Brier in 2010, advances to Saturday’s play-offs.

Cotter, meanwhile, will have to win Friday afternoon’s game (2pm start) against Buchy and Friday evening’s game (7pm start) against either Perepolkin or Dangerfield to advance to the playoffs.

Team Horning and Team Wakefield face off for the chance to advance as well.

Team Yamada, Team Brower, Team Joanisse, Team Tuson, Team Longworth, Team McArdle and Team Montgomery are no longer in the competition.
