February 9, 2013, Langley, BC (ISN) – Led by Canada West leading scorer, fourth year forward Holly Strom, the Trinity Western University Spartans extended their home game winning streak to four games with a 74-65 win over the visiting UBC Okanagan Heat Saturday evening at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.
“There was just a maturity today that we just were not going to let them get ahead of us. We talked after about how we were able to bend, but not break,” commented TWU head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul. “We had some critical defensive stops and with Holly in foul trouble it really challenged the rest of us to step up.”
Strom, who is averaging 19.3 points per game, paced TWU with 25 points, nine rebounds and four steals, while Janelle Traber added a season high 17 points to go with seven rebounds. Leading the way for the Heat were Roslyn Huber with 24 points and Krystal Schouten and Madison Kaneda with 12 points each.
“Janelle has had a couple of good games now and she is finding the shots that she needs to be taking. For us to have someone who can hit the jump shot, with Holly who can attack the rim and Emily Knauff working inside and Stephanie pushing the ball up the floor it gives us a lot of offensive tools and makes us tough to beat,” added Jean-Paul. “We are getting a lot from everybody and that makes it exciting.”
The 25 points gives the Calgary native 386 points as a Spartan in Canada West league play, which breaks the previous record of 367 points set by Taylor Stuart.
“Holly and I had a conversation early in the season about where she could be at the end of the season and we said we wouldn’t talk about it again and that we would just let it happen,” commented Jean-Paul on her star forward. “She is letting it happen. We saw sparks from her all along last season. She is finding a way to find answers and she is refusing to believe that anyone can stop her right now. Her teammates have confidence in her and I have confidence in her.”
The Spartans, who led from start to finish, opened the game with an 18-15 lead after the first quarter and a 32-30 lead at the end of the half.
TWU came out strong to start the second half. The Spartans outscored the Heat 24-17 in the quarter to take a 56-47 lead going into the final frame.
Through the fourth quarter the Spartans extended their lead to a game high 15 points, 66-51, after a short jumper by Chantelle Martin. The Heat looked to close, but the Spartans hit their final three free throws to take the contest 74-65.
The Spartans will now finish off the season with a home-and-home series with the University of the Fraser Valley next Friday in Abbotsford and Saturday back at the Langley Events Centre.
