A Different Route for the 2013 World Jr. A Hockey Challenge

February 11, 2013, South Cowichan, BC (ISN) – The Executive Director of the South Cowichan Chamber of Commerce regrets to announce that the Cowichan Valley and Westshore have not been awarded the opportunity to host the 2013 World Junior A Challenge.

After the very successful event in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia – where the 2012 World Junior A Challenge was held in late November – it has been decided that Nova Scotia shall be hosting the Challenge for a second year.

Over the past six months there has been much planning involved in getting together the funding and backing for the event to occur on Vancouver Island. Numerous conversations had taken place with Hockey Canada, the Canadian Junior Hockey League and our Committee which originally suggested Vancouver Island to be highly favoured for being the site of the venue for the 2013 event, with Cowichan Valley and Westshore sharing the key roles of hosting duties.

Unfortunately, a key concern for Hockey Canada was that due to the only recently lifted shut out of the NHL, they were unsure if they would be receiving the required funding that they normal put forward for these types of events to take place. The concern about funds being secured was taken in to consideration by Hockey Canada as some of that funding was present in the budget for the Cowichan/Westshore proposal. The province of Nova Scotia has the ability to put forward a significant amount of the required funds without requesting the funds from the money that Hockey Canada may or may not receive from the NHL.

“I would like to say ‘Thank you’ to John Elzinga and Kim Liddle of the CVRD Parks and Recreation, and to Scott McWilliam and the Victoria Grizzles and the CVRD Board for all their time and effort put into this endeavour.” Shauna Benson, Executive Director, South Cowichan Chamber of Commerce.

The South Cowichan Chamber of Commerce and the rest of the Cowichan/Westshore Committee would like to congratulate the province of Nova Scotia and the city of Yarmouth for this great opportunity and wishes them another successful event. And for those teams competing in the 2013 World Junior A Challenge good luck.
