Canada West Athletes of the Week: Julian Spear Chief-Morr​is (U of L), Lisa Barclay (UBC)


February 12, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – Basketball player Julian Spear Chief-Morris of Lethbridge & Lisa Barclay from UBC volleyball are Canada West Athletes of the Week.

MALE: #4 Julian Spear Chief-Morris, Lethbridge (basketball)

In the second to last weekend of his final conference season, fifth-year swingman Julian Spear Chief-Morris of the Lethbridge Pronghorns (11-9) combined for 53 points and 19 rebounds to lead the ‘Horns to a weekend sweep of the Regina Cougars (6-14) and keep alive their post-season dreams.

To cap off a career high 28 points Friday night, Spear Chief-Morris tipped in his own miss with two-tenths of a second remaining in overtime to give the ‘Horns a 93-91 win. He also chipped in with eight rebounds on the night.

Saturday night, Spear Chief-Morris followed up his performance with a 25 point effort to lead all scorers in the ‘Horns 103-88 win. He added 11 rebounds to complete the double-double.

With two games remaining against Calgary, Spear Chief-Morris sits second on the ‘Horns in scoring averaging with 14.7 points per game.

FEMALE: #2 Lisa Barclay, UBC (volleyball)

Lisa Barclay and the CIS #1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds ended the Canada West women’s volleyball conference season in style.

Barclay, a native of Brandon, Man., recorded 24 kills on back-to-back nights as UBC defeated the visiting Mt. Royal Cougars twice in Vancouver this past weekend.

On Friday night, Barclay recorded 24 kills and an amazing. 500 hitting percentage on 44 swings. She ended the night with 25 total points as well as 11 digs as the T-Birds won 3-1.

The next night, Barclay again had 24 kills and 11 digs in another 3-1 victory. She added four block assists to finish the game with 26 total points. The reigning CIS Championship MVP sits third in the Canada West in kills per set.

The victories were UBC’s 19th and 20th in a row. The Thunderbirds finished the Canada West season with a record of 21-1 and will have this week off before hosting the Final Four beginning Feb. 21 in Vancouver.
