February 16, 2013, Saskatoon, SK (ISN) – Taking a six-point lead with a late three-pointer, the visiting University of Alberta Pandas defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 67-58 Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
Entering the final quarter, Alberta had a 48-47 lead. The Pandas found the net first in the fourth and didn’t look back, continuing to hold at least a two-point lead through the last frame. A Jessilyn Fairbanks three-pointer to put the Pandas ahead 65-58 sealed the victory.
After the matchup, both teams sit with 13-8 records making the second game of the weekend series of extra importance. The winner of Saturday’s game will finish third in the Canada West’s prairie division. Alberta’s win extends their winning streak to five games.
A tight affair throughout the entire night, Alberta was able to jump ahead in the first quarter to lead 19-14 after a 14-4 run to close out the frame. Saskatchewan found their stride in the second quarter opening on a 10-4 run and led 32-31 at halftime.
A quartet of Pandas led Alberta to the win with Anneka Bakker and Katie Arbuthnot leading the charge with 12 points each. Saskia Van Ginhoven and Megan Wickstrom each added another 10 for Alberta. Fairbanks led on the boards with five rebounds.
Dalyce Emmerson tallied a double-double for Saskatchewan scoring 17 points and 13 rebounds. Kelsey Trulsrud added another 15 points and Kiera Lyons scored 13.
Alberta finished the game shooting at 46%, while Saskatchewan shot at 41%.
The two teams will meet again Saturday afternoon at the PAC in the final regular season. Tipoff is 4 p.m. It can be watched on www.canadawest.tv
