February 15, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes opened a two game weekend set against the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack on Friday night with a come from behind 5-3 victory at UVic’s Ian Stewart Complex.
The game had serious playoff implications as there are only 4 points separating 3rd place and 5th place. The Wolfpack sit in 3rd with 19 points while the Vikes are tied for the 4th and final playoff spot with the Eastern Washington University Eagles at 15 points each.

UVic’s Shawn Mueller opened the scoring, finding the back of the net 58 seconds into the opening frame to put the Vikes up early. The Vikes controlled the play for most of the first period and narrowly missed going up by a pair when Brad Robinson was unable to convert on what looked like a sure goal. The team headed into the first intermission with the score 1-0 for UVic.

The 2nd period saw a reversal as the Wolfpack came out fired up tieing the game at 1-1 off a Joshua Mac Donald goal. The Vikes would answer back less than a minute later when Eli Wiebe potted his 7th goal of the season to put the Vikes back on top.
TRU would get into some penalty trouble mid way through the period but managed to weather the storm. Duncan Schulz would tie the game up at 2-2 at 8:26 of the period then Colten DeFrias would give the Wolfpack the lead at 4:27.

Things got a little testy late in the period after Matthew Maycock was called for a hit to the head and received a 10 minute misconduct.

The 3rd period saw a regrouped Vikes squad hit the ice. They would tie the game 3-3 at 16:09 off a Mark Prest goal then Matthew Bell would put them on top for good at 11:43. A late goal from Shawn Mueller, his 2nd of the game and 17th of the season would add the insurance as the Vikes skated to a hard fought 5-3 win.
The Vikes are now alone in 4th place with 17 points and have a chance to move into a tie for 3rd with the TRU Wolfpack tonight for the final game of their two game set. Game time is 8:00 at UVic’s Ian Stewart Complex.
