Brandon Bobcats Take Three


February 16, 2013, Saskatoon, SK (ISN) – It took the University of Brandon Bobcats three tries at match point to win the fifth set in a 3-2 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 20-25, 25-19, 17-15)

With the win, Brandon takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Canada West quarter-final series.

After dropping the first set, the No. 6 ranked Huskies went on the attack, taking the next two sets from the No. 8 Bobcats. Brandon would not go away easy and won the fourth set 25-19 to force the deciding set.

The fifth set showcased just how evenly matched the two teams were on the night as the two teams battled point for point. Brandon opened the set with two service errors putting the Huskies up 4-2. The Bobcats tied the set at ten thanks to several solid attacks from the back row by Sam Tuivai. A Huskie service error gave Brandon its first lead of the set at 11-10. With the Bobcats leading 14-13 and then again at 15-14, Fraser froze the Bocats with two of his 23 kills to stay alive. Brandon finally secured the win with a strong attack of their own at 17-15.

Fraser led the way for the Huskies tallying 23 kills on the night. Jeff Grant and Joel Dyck both recorded 14 digs.

The attack for the Bobcats was led by Roy Ching, Sam Tuivai and Dan Boutwell who recorded 19, 17 and 15 kills respectively. Scott Neufeld recorded 12 digs to lead Bobcats defensively.

Match 2 of the series goes Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the PAC. The Huskies must win to keep their postseason alive. With a win Brandon can advance to the Canada West Final Four.
