Glacier Kings Captain Honoured for Community Leadership

February 18, 2013, Courtenay, BC (ISN) – Comox Valley Glacier Kings Captain, Nicholas Tupper, was recognized Sunday afternoon at the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League Awards.

Tupper was awarded the Bob Saunders Community Leadership Award.

In a letter recommending Tupper for the award, Glacier Kings Head Coach Bill Rotheisler, spoke about what Tupper brings to the team, “I have had captains who are good motivators, captains who lead more by example on the ice, captains who lead by example off the ice, captains who are an important part of the community, captains the coaching staff look up to and captains the players look up to. I have never, until this year, been blessed with a captain who possesses all these characteristics at the same time.”

“Being involved in the community is a part of being on this team. It’s important to give back to the community that supports us and comes out to our games. We have a big year, hosting the Cyclone Taylor Cup, and I am proud to be a part of the Comox Valley and the whole team is working hard to win the Cup at home,” said Tupper when asked about the honour. The Glacier Kings also finished off a pair of games this weekend that gave many of the Kings players an opportunity to rest some minor aches and bruises. Friday night the Glacier Kings would fall 6-5 in overtime to the Campbell River Storm, despite outshooting them 43-29.

The Glacier Kings Captain, Nick Tupper, had a three point night and the special teams were effective as the Kings went 40% on the power play and were perfect in their penalty kill. Saturday the Glacier Kings hosted the Nanaimo Buccaneers for their last game of the regular season. With eight regulars out of the line up the Glacier Kings would drop a tight 4-3 game with Rylan Ball leading the way with all three goals.
