South Island Royals Draw With Blazers

February 17, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – In a Sunday afternoon clash at Westhills Arena, the South Island Royals welcomed the Thompson Blazers for the second game of a two-game matchup.

South Island settles for 2-2 tie with Thompson

Markus Daly got the start in net for the Royals, while the Blazers looked to Kyle Michalovsky.

Thompson would grab the game’s first marker five minutes in off of a deflection from Carson Richards. From the left half wall Blazers’ forward Max James fed a cross-crease pass to Richards who easily tapped it in past Daly for a 1-0 lead. James would then extend Thompson’s lead to 2-0 two minutes later on the man advantage when he converted on a similar cross-crease pass from Cole McCaskill at the left point.

South Island would cut the lead down to one on a Hayden Hopkins powerplay tally at the 10 minute mark. Royals’ forward Jordan Martin outworked a Blazers defender in the right corner before centering a pass to Hopkins who easily one-timed it past the outstretched blocker of Michalosvky. After 20 minutes of play the scoreboard read 2-1 in favor of the Blazers.

South Island would tie the game at 2-2 just before the halfway mark of the middle frame. Defenceman Garnett Roberts received the puck at the left point and unleashed a slap shot that beat a screened Michalovsky under the blocker. Thompson then looked to regain the lead with consecutive five-on-three man advantages, but strong play from the Royals’ defenders and Daly negated the opportunities as the game went into the second intermission tied 2-2.

South Island looked for their first lead early into the third period when Brodie Smith broke down the right wing on a two-on-one rush. The winger put a shot on goal from the faceoff circle, but found it turned aside easily by the Blazers’ netminder. Thompson then looked for the lead in the last half of the period off of their own two-on-one break. Keaton Gordon bursted down the right boards and quickly put a shot on net from the circle, but Daly stuck out his glove and snagged the puck out of the air to preserve the tie. Royals 2 Blazers 2

Thompson out shot South Island 28-27.

South Island will now conclude the rest of their 2012-13 BCMML Regular Season on the road with matchups against the Cariboo Cougars and Valley West Hawks. Stay tuned to for playoff information.
