February 21, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – The Oil Kings fell short of sweeping a three-game home stand after running into a hot goalie Wednesday night.
Edmonton 2, Regina 3 – FINAL
Edmonton outshot Regina 55-16 only to suffer a 3-2 loss with full marks going to visiting netminder Matt Hewitt. The 20-year old New Westminster, BC product recorded 53 saves to steal a victory. With the loss, the Oil Kings’ record falls to 43-13-2-3 on the season as they lead the Eastern Conference by 9 points over the idle Calgary Hitmen.
Edmonton controlled the play throughout the first period building up a 10 – 3 lead on the shot clock but couldn’t solve Hewitt in the early going. Curtis Lazar opened the scoring 2:03 into the second period with his team leading 33rd goal of the season. The Pats would answer with a pair of power play goals from Lane Scheidl to carry a 2-1 lead into the third.
T.J. Foster tied the game 2-2 with a bank shot off a Regina defender five minutes into the third period. Morgan Klimchuk tallied the eventual game winner with 11 minutes to play in regulation time. The Oil Kings out-shot the Pats 20-7 in the final frame but could not convert to find an equalizer.
The loss was only the Oil Kings sixth of the season within the friendly confines of Rexall Place. Edmonton’s high octane special teams stalled as the power play was 0 for 4 on the evening and the penalty kill allowed the Pats to score on 2 of 3 opportunities.
