February 22, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Rugby Canada and the Rotary Club of Colwood have joined forces to bring the sport of Rugby to the Sooke school district.
The Rotary Club of Colwood, who raised funds from the sale of 50/50 tickets during Rugby Canada events have put the proceeds towards purchasing Starter Kits that will be distributed to middle schools in the Sooke school district.

“Because Rugby Canada was such a strong supporter of the Rotary Club of Colwood, we decide the best use of the funds raised was to put it back into local rugby at the grassroots level” commented the Rotary Club’s Russ Lazaruk.

“When I was in school, the rugby culture was very strong here on the Lower Island it has fallen off as of late and we are happy to be able to give these starter kits to the middle schools here in the Sooke school district and give the children the opportunity to learn the sport of Rugby and help to rebuild that culture.”
Lazaruk pointed to Heather Ratcliff-Hood and Estelle Shelley for being instrumental in getting this project off the ground.

Mike Chu, General Manager of Rugby Canada was on hand and expressed his regards, “A massive thanks to everyone involved and I think in a few years time we are going to see some kids out here pulling on a Canadian jersey that have been touched by this program.”
