February 22, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s track teams look to be in good shape heading into this year’s Canada West championship hosted by the University of Regina, Feb. 22-23.

Led by 2012 CIS All-Canadian and 2012 600-m silver medalist Adam Gaudes (Winnipeg, Man.) and 2012 CIS Rookie of the Year and 2012 600-m gold medalist Rachel Francois (St. Albert, AB), the University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s track teams look to be in good shape.

Both Gaudes and Francois will be looking to make a play for the men’s and women’s 600-m titles and undoubtedly will give both 4×800-m relay teams a boost with the men’s side ranked No. 1 in Canada West and the women’s at No. 2. The Vikes women are currently the defending champions of the 4×800-m title and they will certainly be gunning for another first place finish.

Also ranked No. 1 in Canada West, in the men’s 1000-m, third-year Thomas Riva (Qualicum, BC) has his sights set on gold in this year’s championship. Riva is heading into the meet after a stellar weekend at the University of Washington Husky Classic. On Feb. 9 Riva beat a 24-year-old UVic record in the 800-m with his time of 1:50.38.

In the 1500-m race the top three spots belong to the Vikes as Riva, fourth-year Karl Robertson (Leduc, AB) and sophomore Cody Therrien (Victoria, B.C.) are ranked one, two and three, respectively.

Making his first appearance at the Canada West championships is Vikes rookie Brendon Restall. The Victoria native is hoping to make an impact racing alongside Gaudes in the 600-m and is the lone Vikes representative in the men’s 300-m.

On the women’s side, Francois is doubling up to race the 300-m event as well as her signature 600-m. Fourth-year runners Kendra Pomfret (Roberts Creek, BC) and Jenica Moore (Victoria, BC), alongside sophomores Grace Annear (Hampton, NB) and Halley Cote (Victoria, BC), are also competing in the women’s 600-m. Pomfret took top honours in the 1-km in this year’s Bison Classic, Feb. 1-2, and is the Canada West defending champion, taking home the gold in last year’s race. Competing alongside teammates Maureen McCulligh (Campbell River, BC), Stephanie Trenholm (Campbell River, BC) and rookie Emma Bibault (High River, AB), Pomfret will certainly be looking for a repeat performance this weekend.

The UVic Vikes will begin competition at the 2013 Canada West Track and Field Championships on Friday, Feb. 22 at the Regina Fieldhouse, when the men and women race in the 1000-m event.
