James Bay tops Castaway Wanderers, Premier League standings as second half resumes

February 24, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – James Bay Athletic Association produced an impressive 27-10 bonus point victory over cross-town rivals Oak Bay Castaway Wanderers on Saturday afternoon to go top of the Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League standings.

Shaking off the rust after a three month winter break, James Bay moved to 6-2 and now prepare for a rematch of last year’s provincial final against defending Rounsefell Cup champions Capilano RFC (6-2) next week.

Capilano produced some late heroics to remain unbeaten on their home pitch at Klahane Park, defeating traditional rivals Meraloma Rugby Club (5-3) by a score of 20-17. With a heated match all tied up at 17-17 and under 10 minutes to play, Capilano new addition Matt Simms kicked the game-winning penalty to see his side move into second place in the standings. Meraloma had an opportunity to draw the game level but opted for a quick tap on a penalty and were denied by Capilano’s staunch defence in the closing minutes.

Across town the no. 5 Burnaby Lake Rugby Club (4-3) edged UBCOB Ravens (1-5-1) by a score of 18-12. Burnaby tries came courtesy of Benoit Piffero, James Reekie and Micha Govorchin with the only conversion kicked by Reekie. Back in Victoria, the UVic Vikes (4-4) held on to fourth place with an emphatic 43-24 bonus point victory over White Rock’s Bayside Sharks (2-6).

Next week (March 2nd) will see no. 7 Bayside away to no. 8 UBCOB Ravens in a matchup that could prove crucial in this year’s relegation battle. No. 3 Meraloma will look to regroup as they face off against no. 5 Burnaby at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.
