February 23, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – 2012 Olympian Stephanie Horner (Beaconsfield, Que.) won the women’s 200-m butterfly to give the Vikes their third podium finish after two days of competition at the 2013 CIS Swimming Championships hosted by the University of Calgary.

Horner, a third year business student, had not competed in a 200-m fly since 2010 and after coming in eighth in the preliminary she raced a final time of 2:12.93 to earn top honours.

“Steph won the race from the outside lane after coming in eighth this morning,” said Vikes swim team head coach Peter Vizsolyi. “It was exciting to watch, a real tribute to her willingness to race and the fact that she doesn’t let an early result affect the rest of her meet.”

On the men’s side, Eric Hedlin (San Diego, CA), a first year Vike from San Diego, CA, took home some hardware in the 400-m freestyle. Racing to a time of 3:52.95 Hedlin earned silver, just a few seconds behind University of Toronto’s Frank Despond.

The men’s swim team continues to be hit by a flu bug that has left both 2012 Olympian Alec Page (Cortes Island, BC) and fourth-year Ian Mattock (Sidney BC) out of contention. Yesterday’s bronze medallist in the men’s 200-m freestyle, Keegan Zanatta (Victoria, BC) has also been less than 100 per cent and as a result did not qualify for the 400-m final.

Andre Kudaba (Port Coquitlam, BC) swam the men’s 100-m backstroke in a time of 56.25 to place 15th and 16th in the 200-m fly at 2:09.42. The men’s 800-m relay team, comprised of Zanatta, Hedlin,Zachary Parkes (Victoria, B.C.) and Nicholas Sinclair (Victoria, B.C.) took fifth with their time of 7:22.17

Wrapping up day two for the women were Sydney Carr (Victoria, BC), Allison Wood (Victoria, BC), Rachael Newman (Victoria, BC) and Horner in the 800-m freestyle relay. The Vikes contingent came in at number 11 with a time of 8:36.71.
