February 24, 2013, Saskatoon, SK (ISN) – The No. 7 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies forced Game 3 in a Canada West best-of-three men’s basketball quarter-final with a 78-58 victory over the visiting University of Fraser Valley Cascades Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Needing a win to avoid the upset in the series after an 83-64 loss in Game 1, Saskatchewan used a lopsided third quarter to pull away in the game. The Huskies outscored Fraser Valley 25-9 in the frame and Saskatchewan’s defence held the Cascades to just six points in the first eight minutes.

Down 61-39 entering the fourth, Fraser Valley made a bid for a comeback outscoring the Huskies 19-17 in the frame, but Saskatchewan’s strong third quarter lead was too much to overcome.

Saskatchewan led 20-17 after the first quarter and started the second on a 6-0 run. The Huskies kept the six point lead at halftime, 36-30. Just twice in the game did Fraser Valley tie the Huskies – both in the first half.

After shooting just 34% in Game 1, Saskatchewan improved to 40% on Saturday night and shot at 46% in the second half. Fraser Valley shot just 35% in the game. The Huskies also won the battle on the boards outrebound the Cascades 46-35.

Canada West regular season leading scorer Stephon Lamar led the Huskies to the win netting 37 points in the game. Ben Baker added another 13 points and six rebounds, while fifth-year forward Patrick Burns nabbed 13 rebounds.

Manjodh Dulay led the Cascades with 12 points, while Kevon Parchment and James York each scored 10. Parchment also had team-high six rebounds for Fraser Valley.

Tipoff in Game 3 is 7 p.m. at the PAC. For tickets, visit huskies.usask.ca. The winner of the playoff series will advance to the Canada West Final Four.
