February 24, 2013, Kennewick, WA (ISN) – The Oil Kings’ special teams continued to struggle as Edmonton fell 8-1 to the Tri City Americans on Saturday night in Kennewick, Washington. The defeat dropped the Oil Kings’ overall record to 43-15-2-3 on the season.

This marks the first time in the 2012-13 season the Oil Kings have suffered three consecutive regulation losses. Edmonton maintains a seven point lead over Calgary for top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Hitmen suffered a 5-1 loss to the Kootenay Ice earlier in the evening.

Edmonton came out shooting following Friday night’s loss in Spokane but it was the Americans who opened the scoring. Mitch Topping notched a power play goal with under two minutes to play in the first period. Zach Yuen then made it a 2-0 game less than 2 minutes into the second on the Ams second power play of the night. The Oil Kings entered the game with the WHL’s number one ranked penalty kill but allowed the Americans to go an impressive 3 for 4 with the man advantage.

Henrik Samuelsson scored the lone Oil Kings’ goal just over 22 minutes into the game to cut the defecit to one goal but the Americans didn’t look back the rest of the way. The Ams would go on to add six unanswered goals from Beau McCue, Justin Feser, Connor Rankin, Fraser Bulbuc and Jesse Mychan with a pair. The 7-goal loss was the Oil Kings’ most lopsided regular season defeat since an 8-1 loss to the Red Deer Rebels on September 25th, 2010.

Edmonton continues this five-game U.S. Division road trip on Tuesday, February 26th as they take on the Seattle Thunderbirds. Game time is set for 8:05 p.m. MST. All games this season will be broadcast live on the TEAM 1260 and streamed live at WHL.ca.
