February 24, 2013, Kent (ISN) – Mirco Mueller netted the game-winning goal at 2:07 of overtime to lift the Everett Silvertips to a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds Saturday night at the ShoWare Center.
The victory snapped a franchise-record winless streak and brought Everett back within one point of the Thunderbirds in the Western Conference standings.
Landon Oslanski set up Mueller for the game-winning shot during a 2-on-1 rush in overtime, drawing his third assist of the night in the process. Tyler Sandhu scored both of Everett’s goals on the powerplay during regulation, with Josh Winquist assisting on both. Austin Lotz (13-16-1-1) was solid with 36 saves at the other end to earn the win in goal.
The teams traded unsuccessful powerplays to start the opening period before the Silvertips got a lengthy two-man advantage as Seattle was whistled for two infractions in one stoppage. Everett converted the 5-on-3 with crisp passing as Landon Oslanski and Josh Winquist set up Tyler Sandhu’s one-timer on the weak side to put the ‘Tips ahead at 11:04. The teams combined for 24 minutes in penalties during a chippy first period and Everett went to the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
Scoring chances were hard to come through most of the second stanza as both teams played a sound defensive game and Seattle outshot Everett by a narrow 8-7 margin. With the period winding down, the Silvertips found themselves on another 5-on-3 powerplay after Jerret Smith shot the puck out of play for a delay of game call with Alexander Delnov already in the penalty box. Sandhu then converted for the second time in the game, sending the puck off goaltender Brandon Glover and in to give Everett a 2-0 advantage with just 44 seconds remaining in the period.
The T-Birds cut into the lead on a powerplay of their own early in the third as Shea Theodore sent a long wrist shot into the top corner through a screen. Seattle increased the pressure and then evened the score when Griffin Foulk’s seeing-eye shot off a draw found its way through heavy traffic and past Austin Lotz at 11:54. The 2-2 tie continued through the remainder of regulation despite a 17-8 third-period shot edge for the Thunderbirds and the game went to overtime.
The Silvertips created a 2-on-1 break just two minutes into the extra session, with Mueller roofing Oslanski’s cross-slot feed to end the game with his first career overtime goal. Everett scored two powerplay goals on seven opportunities in the win, while Seattle finished 1 for 4. Brandon Glover (20-24-5-1) took the loss in goal with 23 saves as the Thunderbirds outshot the Silvertips 38-26 for the night.
