February 26, 2013, (ISN) – Rowing Canada Aviron today officially announced the team that will compete in the first World Cup at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith, March 22 to 24, 2013.

Canada is sending members of its women’s team, including four 2012 Olympic medalists, and many up-and-coming 2015 Pan Am and 2016 Olympic hopefuls.

“This is a great way to kick off the campaign on the road to Rio,” said Peter Cookson, Rowing Canada Aviron High Performance Director. “After a productive camp in California earlier this month, the women are eager to compete in Sydney at the site of the 2000 Olympic regatta.”

Prior to the World Cup event, the women will participate in a training camp (March 10 to 20) in Launceston, Tasmania. This World Cup warm-up camp will be led by their coach, John Keogh, who is originally from that part of Australia.

Sydney World Cup organisers are anticipating that approximately 20 nations will participate, and leading up to the World Rowing Cup is a week-long rowing festival. This festival includes the Australian Open Rowing Championships, the Australian Open Schools Championships and the King’s and Queen’s Cup interstate regatta.

Footage from the finals at the World Cup will be streamed live on the World Rowing website (www.worldrowing.com)  on March 23.
