March 2, 2013 Victoria, BC (ISN) – Round Robin play got underway bright and early at Rugby Canada’s Centre for Excellence for the 25 University teams (15 men’s and 10 Women’s) participating in the 2013 National Invitational University 7’s Championship, with the University of Victoria Vikes atop the Men’s division while the Guelph Gryphons are atop the Women’s division.
The weather held out for most of the day as the Championships got under way with 50 games played between Westhills Stadium and Goudy Field in Langford on Friday.
With the Rio 2016 Olympics right around the corner and Rugby Canada’s commitment to growing the 7’s game, this tournament is the perfect stage for the players to showcase their talents in front of the Rugby Canada High Performance staff.

The Men’s side saw the top seeds all perform as expected with the UVic Vikes, University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and University of Western Ontario Mustangs finishing at the top of their respective pools with 4-0 records. UVic took top spot overall with the point differential with UBC 2nd and Western 3rd. The UVic Norsemen hold the 4th spot with a 3-1 record, their only loss coming in a close 24-19 match with Western.

The Guelph Gryphons once again proved the cream of the crop on the Women’s side going 4-0 to win their pool, while the University of Calgary Dinos, also 4-0, took top spot in their pool but sit in 2nd place overall due to point differential, the University of Alberta is in 3rd, UBC 4th, Western 5th, McMaster 6th, UVic 7th, Humber 8th, UBC – Okanagan 9th and Regina 10th.

Play continues Saturday on the Men’s side with the UVic Vikes, UBC, Western, UVic Norsemen, McMaster, Queens, Mount Royal and Alberta squaring off in the Cup semi-finals. Royal Military College, Humber and UBC – Okanagan will battle for the Bowl with Waterloo, SFU and Regina challenging for the Shield.
On the Women’s side the top six teams will be split into two pools of 3 for a round robin with the top teams from each pool playing for the Cup, 2nd place in each pool for the Plate and 3rd place in each pool for the Bowl, while the bottom four teams from Day 1 will play a round robin for the Shield.

Play gets under way on Saturday at 9 am with the finals set to begin at 6:52 pm.
