March 2, 2013, Sherbrooke, Que (CIS) – The fourth-seeded Trinity Western Spartans equalled the best result in program history at the CIS women’s volleyball championship thanks to a 25-18, 25-20, 25-13 win over the third-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees in Saturday afternoon’s bronze-medal match at Université de Sherbrooke.

Already down a set, the OUA champion Gee-Gees suffered a severe lost in the second set when their star power hitter Karina Krueger Schwanke twisted her left knee. The Ontario conference MVP took many minutes before leaving the court in great pain.

Already behind in the game, the Gee-Gee,s could not resist the offense by the Spartans in the third set and were unrecognizable compared to the combative team they had been the day before when they failed to qualify for the finals.

The balance and skill of the Western players guided them straight to the bronze medal. This was their second bronze medal in three years at the CIS Championship. This is certainly a fine reward for these players who had hoped on Friday evening to overturn the five consecutive titles won by the Thunderbirds of UBC.

For Ottawa, the fourth place acquired today represents nevertheless, the third best placing in the history of the women’s volleyball program, after having obtained silver and bronze medals in the early 1980’s.

The last set ended by the score of 25-13 and thus completed the shutout 3-0.
