March 5, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – On Mar. 6 the University of Victoria Vikes men’s rugby team will host Canada’s U-20 men with all proceeds from the gate going towards supporting the Rugby Canada players heading to the 2013 Junior World Rugby Trophy in Chile at the end of May.

As part of a week-long Rugby Canada training camp for 30 of the most promising under-20 players from across the country, the Vikes have agreed to play an exhibition match at Centennial Stadium in order to help the U-20 team prepare for the Junior World Trophy. Admission to the game is by donation with all money raised going towards supporting the Chile-bound squad.

The match certainly exhibits the strength of UVic’s program with three current Vikes, Patrick Kay (Duncan, B.C.), Nathan Yanagiya (North Vancouver, BC) and Haydn Evanstaking part in the March camp and selected to Canada’s U-20 line up in tomorrow’s friendly.

Recently named as the 2013 National University Sevens Championship player of the tournament, Kay has proved he is an incredibly versatile player, easily shifting between both rugby union and rugby sevens. The sophomore from Duncan, B.C. is currently in the B.C. Rugby Union’s top-10 scoring leaders with 25 points in five games and is second in scoring for the Vikes, surpassed only by UVic’s Beau Parker (Vancouver, BC).

Rookie Vike Yanigaya has also stepped up to play a key role in recent weeks. Most notably, Yanigaya crossed the line six times in this past weekend’s National University Sevens to be one of the Vikes’ top try scorers. During UVic’s last rugby union match up against the Bayside AA Sharks Yanigaya was instrumental in the Vikes’ 43-24 victory, tallying a try and making several crucial tackles.

With UVic gearing up for a big game this weekend against local competition the Castaway Wanderers the Vikes line up in tomorrow night’s game will feature several players from UVic’s development squads, giving up-and-coming athletes the opportunity to showcase their talent.

The Vikes kick off against Canada’s U-20 men’s team at 7:00 p.m, Mar. 6, in UVic’s Centennial Stadium.
