March 9, 2013, Brandon, MB (ISN) – Stephane Legault tallied a goal as well as the shootout winner to help the Oil Kings clinch their second straight Eastern Conference regular season title on Friday.
Edmonton’s 3-2 shootout victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings raised the Oil Kings record to 48-15-2-3 on the season. The Oil Kings have 101 points and a 12-point cushion over the second place Hitmen for top spot in the conference. Edmonton is now six points back of the Portland Winterhawks in the race for the overall WHL regular season title.
Legault opened the scoring in the first period following an Oil Kings offensive zone face off. The Edmonton Minor Hockey product found the puck in the slot and ripped home his 12th of the season. The Oil Kings and Wheat Kings then ground out a scoreless second period despite Edmonton blasting 27 shots at Brandon goaltender Corbin Boes.
The third period saw Nick Buonassisi tie the game for the home side on the power play at 7:28. Oilers draft pick Mitch Moroz would answer for the Oil Kings with five minutes to play in the period. The power forward bullied his way to the front of the net and notched his 12th of the season to make it a 2-1 Oil Kings lead. Tim McGauley provided the home town heroics scoring with just 32 seconds remaining to force overtime.
Oil Kings’ goaltender Laurent Brossoit posted 23 saves including 4 game savers in the overtime period. Brossoit raised his record to 32-8-2-3 with a 2.29 GAA and a 0.915 save percentage. “LB” shut the door on both Brandon shooters to set the table for Henrik Samuelsson and Legault’s shootout goals.
Edmonton’s closing the gap on modern franchise records when it comes to wins. Last season, the Oil Kings finished the regular season with a record of 50-15-3-4 for 107 points to claim the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as the WHL regular season champion. Edmonton’s currently sitting with 101 points with 4 games remaining in the regular season.
