March 10, 2013, Vancouver, BC (ISN) – In a Saturday night contest at Pacific Coliseum, the Victoria Royals squared off against the Vancouver Giants for the final time this season.

The Royals gave Coleman Vollrath the start in goal, while the Giants responded with Payton Lee.

Victoria received a powerplay opportunity early, and they took full advantage of it with a goal from Jamie Crooks just 34 seconds into the game. Jordan Fransoo fired a hard pass from the left point to an open Crooks. The Royals’ leading goal scorer received the pass at the right face-off circle before he wired it under Lee’s glove. Tensions flared soon after as Fransoo dropped the gloves with Scott Cooke and skated away with the decision. The Giants then responded with a goal from Carter Popoff at 3:53. Brett Kulak’s point shot was initially stopped, but the rebound slid out to the high slot and Popoff one-timed it past Vollrath. The teams traded offensive rushes in the late stages of the period, but the score remained 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.

The second period was a back-and-forth affair. The two BC Division rivals exchanged chances throughout a fast-paced period, but both goalies were up to the task. Vollrath turned aside all 14 shots he faced in the second period, including a two big pad saves that kept the game tied 1-1 after two periods of play.

Vancouver took their first lead of the game on a goal by Jackson Houck at 8:20 of the final frame. Kulak’s point shot was stopped by Vollrath, but the rebound bounced to the bottom of the left face-off circle where Houck snapped the rebound past the sprawled goaltender. The Royals pulled the goalie in the last minute to try and pull even, but Houck deposited his second goal of the period into the empty net to seal the win for the home team. Vancouver 3 Victoria 1.

Victoria went 1/1=100.0% on the powerplay, while Vancouver went 0/0=0.0%. The Giants outshot the Royals 40-20.

The Royals will now head home to host the Portland Winterhawks for a pair of games beginning tomorrow night and concluding Tuesday evening. Puck drop for Sunday’s game is an early start slated for 5:05 p.m.
