March 10, 2013, Everett, Kent (ISN) – Tyler Sandhu scored twice and the Everett Silvertips battled back from two deficits to claim a 4-3 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds Saturday night at the ShoWare Center.
Their fifth win of the year over Seattle brings Everett back within one point of the Thunderbirds for seventh place in the Western Conference playoff race with three games remaining.
Dawson Leedahl scored the game-winning goal in the third period and Reid Petryk also scored to help complement Sandhu’s two goals, which gave him seven tallies against the T-Birds of his 16 overall goals this year. Austin Lotz (15-18-2-1) stopped 28 shots to earn the win in goal and also had his first career fight with Seattle’s Brandon Glover as the game took an especially angry turn in the final minutes.
The teams exchanged shorthanded goals in the first period to leave the game tied at one after one. The ‘Tips had the game’s first powerplay midway through the first, but Luke Lockhart would be the one to capitalize with a top-corner wrist shot off a 1-on-1 rush to give the T-Birds a 1-0 lead. Reid Petryk answered for Everett later in the period, creating a 2-on-1 shorthanded break before ripping a shot top shelf to even the game at one. Shots through 20 minutes were 8-7 in favor of the Thunderbirds.
The T-Birds scored early in the second to re-take the lead as Connor Honey stepped out from behind the net and snuck a quick shot past Lotz at 1:13. The Silvertips again evened things up after Kohl Bauml received a stretch pass from Tyler Sandhu and was stopped on the ensuing breakaway, but Sandhu followed the play and poked in the loose puck to tie the game at two. Everett outshot Seattle 14-9 in the middle frame.
The game remained at 2-2 through much of the third before the ‘Tips gained their first lead on a powerplay goal as Sandhu slammed in the rebound of a Josh Winquist shot at 12:39. The lead lasted only eight seconds however, as Seattle’s Shea Theodore skated the faceoff win into the Everett zone and across the slot before tucking the puck around Lotz to tie the game at three.
With less than three minutes remaining and the game still tied, Glover stopped a Landon Oslanski shot from the right point before Dawson Leedahl slid the rebound under him and in to put the ‘Tips back on top at 4-3. Tempers flared in the final minutes following a collision along the boards as Evan Wardley’s charging major set off a large scrum that resulted in Glover charging Lotz’ crease as both goalies received fighting majors. Seattle racked up 44 minutes in penalties during the stoppage, while Everett was charged with only nine. The ‘Tips then held off a final Thunderbirds push with the net empty to clinch the 4-3 win.
Shots ended up even at 31 for both teams after 60 minutes of play. Brandon Glover (22-28-5-2) stopped 27 of 31 shot in net for the T-Birds before garnering a game misconduct for instigating the fight with Lotz. Everett went 1 for 4 on the powerplay and stopped the Thunderbirds on their lone powerplay attempt.
