March 10, 2013,Courtenay, BC (ISN) – The Vancouver Island Mountain Sport Society (VIMSS) invites you to races of a different kind, ones that support emerging Vancouver Island athletes while offering a social evening at Mount Washington’s Raven Lodge.

“VIMSS Night at the Races”, Saturday, April 6, 2013, features an opportunity to go to the virtual horse races while enjoying an evening of fine Italian food, wine and dessert. With VIMSS bucks provided, guests can have some fun throughout the evening picking their race winner and then bidding on items presented at the silent and live auctions. Proceeds from the evening will be targeted for the VIMSS athlete fund, which has raised over $80,000 since 2003 and has helped nearly 50 athletes with their training and travel expenses as they compete and represent BC and Canada at competitions around the world.

“This annual fundraising event always strives to combine fun and fundraising,” said VIMSS Chair Karen Bonell. “When VIMSS started, we said we wanted to see a mountain sport athlete from Vancouver Island or the surrounding Gulf Islands make it to the Olympic or Paralympic Games. Many of these amazing athletes who we have supported are currently chasing valuable points towards the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, and we invite you to help them get there with events like these.”

“VIMSS Night at the Races” starts at 6:00 p.m. on April 6. Tickets, $60 including dinner, wine and $5 VIMSS bucks, are available by emailing .

VIMSS is a not-for-profit association that raises funds for emerging amateur athletes who compete in the mountain sports of Alpine, Nordic and Freestyle Skiing, snowboarding, adaptive snow sports, biathlon and mountain biking.
