March 11, 2013, Brandon, MB (ISN) – The Brandon Wheat Kings, in association with Atom-Jet Group have announced plans to recognize the Brandon University Bobcats Mens Volleyball team at this Wednesday’s Western Hockey League game against the visiting Prince Albert Raiders at Westman Communications Group Place.
For the third time in five years, the men’s team recently captured a medal at the CIS national championship.
After capturing the Canada West league title last month, the Bobcats entered the national tournament in Quebec City as the number one seed. After losing a tough semi-final match to the eventual champions – the Laval Rouge et Or – in a thrilling five-set match, the Bobcats rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to score a come from behind win over the Western Ontario Mustangs in the Bronze Medal game.
In three trips to the national championship, the Bobcats have brought home a medal each time.
“It was really important to bounce back and win the bronze medal,” said Brandon head coach Grant Wilson. “We came here to win, and losing twice in a row would not have been the way we wanted for sure.”
The tournament also brought the careers of two Bobcats to a close.
Scott Neufeld finished his 5-year CIS career as one of the most decorated Bobcats ever. The Crocus Plains graduate is the only member of the men’s volleyball program to be on all three medal winning teams. Also playing his final CIS match this month was fifth-year setter Garnett Popplestone.
The Bobcats will be recognized before the start of the second period Wednesday night.
In addition to honouring the ‘Cats, fans attending the game will have a chance to help out the Brandon Humane Society by participating in the annual Pucks ‘n Pets Ball Toss for a Toonie. Fans that do, will have a chance to win a 2013-14 Wheat Kings’ Season Ticket. All proceeds from Wednesday’s sale of tennis balls will be donated to the Brandon Humane Society.
Wednesday is also Rain Check Night. Any unused ticket (dated December 14th to March 9th) can be exchanged at the box office for a “free” ticket to this game (tickets will be subject to box office agency fees).
Following Wednesday’s game, the Wheat Kings will bring the curtain down on their 2012-13 regular season with a weekend home and home series with the Moose Jaw Warriors.
Saturday’s game in Brandon will feature the Wheat Kings’ Annual Awards Night.
Tickets to both of Brandon’s remaining home games are on sale this week at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com
