March 12, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – The Oil Kings jumped out to a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes but found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-2 shootout loss to the Saskatoon Blades on Tuesday.
Saskatoon posted a pair of unanswered goals in the third period to force overtime and survived a furious attack to force the shootout in Edmonton’s first game back after a season long 8-game road trip. The Oil Kings remain firmly entrenched atop the WHL Eastern Conference standings having already clinched the regular season conference title.
Keegan Lowe notched his 15th of the season off a cross ice feed from Dylan Wruck 11:02 into the game. The helper was Wruck’s 63rd of the year as he continues to establish a new Oil Kings modern era record for assists in a season. Lowe’s 15th also added to his modern era record for goals by a defenseman.
Wruck continued his solid play throughout the second period as the Oil Kings took control. The 20-year- old tucked his 22nd of the season with a nice toe drag past Saskatoon goaltender Andrey Makarov. The Oil Kings outshot the Blades 20-14 but couldn’t add to their 2-0 lead.
Saskatoon pushed back in the third with goals from Brendan Walker and Shane McColgan. Some spectacular saves by Oil Kings goaltender Laurent Brossoit down the stretch kept the game in reach for the home side. Wruck had the best chance for the Oil Kings in the overtime period wiring a shot off the post and out.
Brossoit posted a 35 save effort in the loss as his record moved to 32-8-2-4 on the year. “LB” was unable to stop McColgan in the shootout while Makarov made the save on all three Oil Kings shooters including Henrik Samuelsson, Stephane Legault and Trevor Cheek.
The shootout loss drops Edmonton’s record to 49-15-2-4 in 2012-13. The Oil Kings have now totalled 104 points with 2 games remaining in the regular season. Last season, the Oil Kings finished the regular season with a record of 50-15-3-4 for 107 points to claim the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as the WHL regular season champion.
