March 16, 2013, Red Deer, AB (ISN) – The Oil Kings posted their 50th win of the season with a 3-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels on Friday. This marks the second straight 50 win season in the modern era of the franchise.
With a record of 50-15-2-4 the Oil Kings now have 106 points with 1 game remaining in the regular season. Last year, the Oil Kings finished the regular season with a record of 50-15-3-4 for 107 points to claim the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as the WHL regular season champions. The Oil Kings will have the opportunity to break their modern franchise records for wins and points in a season Sunday night against these very same Red Deer Rebels.
After a scoreless first period Red Deer drew first blood in the second. Jordan DePape scored a power play goal to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead at 6:07 of the period. But the Oil Kings would solve Red Deer goaltender Patrick Bartosak late in the frame. Henrik Samuelsson notched his 33rd of the season on a one timer off a brilliant feed from Michael St.Croix. St.Croix continues to lead the Oil Kings scoring race with 37 goals and 53 assists for 90 points.
Bartosak kept the Rebels in the game as the Oil Kings applied consistent pressure throughout the 3rd period. Edmonton Captain Griffin Reinhart finally netted the game winner 6:59 into the final period. Reinhart played a point shot off the back wall that took an odd bounce and banked in off of Bartosak’s skate. “The Big Cat’s” eighth of the year gave the Oil Kings their first lead of the night.
Goaltender Laurent Brossoit was excellent down the stretch as he posted 30 saves in the win. The Calgary Flames draft pick raised his record to 33-8-2-4 on the season with a 2.25 GAA and a 0.917 save percentage. Curtis Lazar tied St.Croix for the team lead in goals as he notched an empty netter with one second to play.
