March 17, 2013, Regina, Sask (ISN) – Second-year guard Gabriela Hébert was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and led all players with 19 points to power McGill to a 71-50 win over Ottawa in the 2013 CIS Championship’s consolation final at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Hebert was also 3-for-3 from three-point range for the Martlets, while Kathy Shields Award recipient Mariam Sylla had 14 points and eight rebounds in the victory.
Kim Cupid scored 10 points in 14 minutes off the bench to lead Ottawa, which ends up in sixth place in the tournament.
“We wanted to be playing on Sunday and everyone had confidence in everyone else today,” McGill head coach Ryan Thorne said. “Gabriela is a streaker shooter and you have to let her shoot until she cools off, but she just didn’t cool off today.”
McGill led from wire to wire, jumping out to a 15-2 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter and essentially kept the game under control throughout. Ottawa briefly threatened to close the gap in the second quarter, but Hebert hit three straight outside shots including two treys to extend the Martlet lead back to sixteen points. Hebert was 6-for-6 from the field in the first half alone.
The Gee-Gees’ player of the game, Cupid, did an admirable job of keeping Ottawa close in a foul-filled third quarter. She sank a pretty jumper from the foul line and also shot 5-for-6 from the free throw line during a two minute scoring spree and the Martlet lead was down to 52-40 going into the fourth. Cupid led the Gee-Gees offence which shot just under 30% in the game.
Hebert sank a contested three from the corner midway through the fourth quarter which served as the dagger. With turnover after turnover on the offensive end, Ottawa got no closer than the sixteen point spread established by the Hebert strike.
