March 19, 2013, Vancouver Island (ISN) – The first race of the Island Cup Mountain Bike Series took place at the Mount Work, Hartland on Sunday, hosted by ProCity Cycling.
117 Riders in three categories; beginner, intermediate and expert tackled 2, 3 or 4 laps respectively of this classic cross country course. The course included single track with mud, fire track with mud, forest with mud covered tree roots, rock outcrops with mud at the bottom.

The course also included a river crossing which cleaned competitors bikes ready for the next mud covered lap. In fact, due to heavy rainfall a slight alteration to the course was made just prior to race day (perhaps from fear of too much mud?).

All categories started at the same time with the field soon stretching out as it wound its way round the trails. Evan Guthrie from Peachland, BC and one of the riders on Canada’s National Mountain Bike Team built on an early lead of over Thomas Skinner and Carter Hovey to finish in first place four and a half minutes ahead of the chasing field.

In the womens category, Mical Dyck of Pro City Racing finished in first place ahead of Kate Scallion and Kelly Roloff.

The next event in the Island Cup Series will be Hammerfest near Englishman River Falls in Errington on 24th March.
